Chapter 21:
Contract Haulers
The first truck to haul bulk for us was a tandem, owned by a local farmer named Mel Berglund. It was the year of the "Mud Bowl." Bags were hauled in by Ashton Transport, whose trucks were pulled in and out by Dave Terrault's tractor. NH3 was hauled in by VLR Carriers, who were also pulled in and out. A few years later, Louie Brison started hauling bulk, followed by Murray Mulligan, who is now our main bulk carrier today. In 1978, my brother Roy and his son, Rick, moved back to Alberta and started pulling for VLR Carriers. A few years later, Roy left VLR, bought an NH3 trailer and bulk trailers and hauled all our NH3 to St. Albert and Legal. He also hauled all of St. Albert's bulk and half of Legal's bulk. Mulligan hauled the other half. Roy and Rick always had top-notch equipment and were reliable and committed, and they gave us excellent service.
In 2012, Rick semi-retired and SVF bought two of his bulkers, which we use, but Mulligan still hauls a major amount of our bulk to both St. Albert and Legal. Rick has moved back to B.C. but still comes out in the spring and fall to haul our NH3. SVF also owns two NH3 trailers equipped with meters so they can deliver to customers or can haul to our storage tanks if required.
